Heading toward the Public Cult to Satan

Marian Horvat, Ph.D.
It seems clear that we are reaching the final stage of the revolutionary process, which is the step where man openly worships the Devil. The hippy revolution was a remote preparation for the reign of the Devil. It broke the final barriers of Christian Civilization, throwing out all restraints and the good customs so that man would enter a stage of new barbarianism, a new paganism, an order of things – I cannot call it a civilization – whose head is no longer Christ but the Devil himself.

When I use the expression the reign of the Devil, someone can object that these words are too strong. Twenty five years ago, when I first heard them in a talk by Prof. Plinio, who was explaining where the revolutionary process would end, the very concept seemed implausible to me. I thought: No one with good sense or religious spirit would stand for such a thing.

Today, I see that his prediction was true. More and more the Devil presents himself openly and asks to be adored. More and more ambiences, ways of being and dressing, dances and music are Satanic. And in the atmosphere of incoherence, indifference and contradiction that we inhale today, almost no one is shocked by things that would have caused extreme consternation in society even two decades ago.

Let me offer some examples to demonstrate the point.

Open worship of the Devil in Detroit

Not only is the Satanic Temple growing in all segments of society, and especially among the youth, but on July 27, 2015, its Detroit chapter had the audacity to unveil a 9-foot, 2,000- pound bronze statue of Baphomet, a goat-headed demon, for public worship in a rented warehouse.

A 9-foot bronze statue of Baphomet, a goat-headed devil, was recently unveiled in Detroit

Satanic Temple officials delivered speeches and a pair of shirtless men held candles on either side of the statue prior to its unveiling. Hundreds were in attendance, crying out “Hail, Satan!” as the curtain was lifted just before midnight. Then, the two shirtless men kissed each other in front of Satan. Statues of a smiling boy and girl in poses of adoration are on either side of the Devil, who reigns from a throne.

Meanwhile, at the event, the 700 who had tickets to enter were washed in red light shining down from the rafters as dark punk bands played from a stage set up under a lighted, upside-down crucifix. In front of the stage was a sign with the words “This is my body, this is my blood,” in a blasphemous referrence to the words of the Transubstantiation It is shocking, but there really is nothing new here. It repeats the dark Satanic theatrics and props used in so many rock concerts that attract millions (and not just the youth!) every year...

To keep “Christians” out, all present were required to sign a document where they agreed to deliver their soul to the Devil:

“I agree that by signing this document under any name, given or adopted, actual or pseudonymous, I am hereby avowing my soul to Satan (aka Abbadon, aka Lucifer, aka Beelzebub, aka The Antichrist) ...

“I do so knowing that He (aka The Fallen One, aka The Father of Lies) or any of his representatives may choose to collect my eternal soul at any time, with or without notice. I understand that my signature or mark representing any name, real or made up, upon these papers constitutes a lasting and eternal contract, and that there will be no further negotiations on the matter of my eternal soul.” (Original here)

Seven hundred souls – in jest or in all seriousness – willingly gave their souls over to Satan, laughing and dancing as they accept damnation as their eternal destiny. The Satanic Temple’s plan for the statue is to place it, on the claim of religious liberty, next to a Ten Commandments statue on the Oklahoma statehouse grounds.

Who could imagine that such an open demonstration of welcome for Satan could take place with a minimum of protest? There were some protesters, about 50 of them and mostly Protestant, at another site (no one was told where the unveiling would take place precisely to avoid commotion) praying for the city and denouncing the monument. A meek response to such an enormous evil.

The dominant media treated the event as a joke, an amusing story. The Archdiocese of Detroit declined to comment on the unveiling of Baphomet or the Satanic Temple. Nor should we expect any strong statement from the American Bishops denouncing the growing public expressions of Satanism. After all, following the new doctrine of Vatican II, every “faith” – including Satanism – has a right to freely express itself in the name of religious liberty.

If the public unveiling of the statue of Baphomet and the indifferent reaction is not a sign we are at the eve of the day where Satan could appear and be publicly adored by his followers, then I do not know what is.

Lucifer in the city of the Angels

We find another indication of the modern world's complaisance with the Devil in a more subtle sign of welcome. In the line-up for this FOX-TV’s new programs this season is a series titled Lucifer.

To many persons nowadays, who are accustomed to vampires, witches and other occult themes, the plot will seem mild indeed. Bored with Hell, the fallen angel Lucifer Morningstar decides to leave his kingdom and comes to Los Angeles to enjoy the good life of fast cars, women and luxurious living.

FOX presents a likeable Lucifer who can still be redeemed

After a while, he comes under the influence of a lawyer (lady, of course) who is oblivious to his powers. Why is this? Not because she is Catholic and follows the Ten Commandments, but simply because she is committed to social justice issues. It is the new type of “good person,” who, sad to say, the Conciliar Church also approves.

Finally, another devil named Amenadiel is sent from Hell to demand the return of its lord to the underworld. And so we have the big question: is the Devil redeemable and will he return to the world of Evil or he is good and should stay with us? It is a theme that would absolutely delight von Balthasar and his disciples John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The Devil freed from Hell because of a call of the “good.” Another conciliar theme set in a Hollywood script.

My reader may ask, "What is so wrong with this?"

Such programs move the tendencies of man to accept a new version of the Devil, a more palatable creature, who does not need to be rejected. In the back of minds is planted the idea that the “old way” of seeing the Devil is outdated and wrong; the new way reveals a reformation possible even for Lucifer, who is not such a bad fellow after all. All this is done in the name of humor and tolerance.

While the unveiling of Baphomet by the Satanic Temple is blatantly blasphemous and horrendous, the introduction of programs like Lucifer is a more subtle and insidious way to infiltrate the minds of man with an acceptance for the Devil and his reign. In my view, it is actually more dangerous, because once a man has entered this pathway, he is on the straight and easy way to acceptance of open Satanism in society.
