Lucifer, Disney & Dating a Protestant

Lucifer Invoked in a Catholic Ceremony?

Dear TIA,

Will someone please look over this video of the canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II, in which a cantor sings about Lucifer. The video claims that Lucifer is declared God. Is there any legitimate meaning used by Catholics of the word “Lucifer” other than Satan? Our knowledge of Ecclesiastical Latin is not sufficient to judge this.

Here is another video of the Easter Vigil at St. Peter’s. Are these false Protestant imaginings? Could these videos have been altered and pieced? Is there some logical explanation?

TIA responds:

Dear E.F and A.F.,

In ecclesiastical Latin Lucifer does not mean exclusively Satan. At times it means simply the light-bringer or morning star. For example, Jesus Christ is called by St. Peter the Lucifer Who must rise in the hearts of Christians by grace and light of the Faith and, after, must come in person in the second coming (cf. 2 Pet 2:19). St. John also calls Christ the bright morning star (cf. Apoc 22:16).

In the liturgy of Holy Saturday, in the Exultet, the Church also gives this title to the Savior. She wishes that the rising Lucifer (Our Lord) finds the clergy lit: “this Lucifer Who does not know decline, and Who, coming back from Hell, shines His pure light over mankind.” (Dictionnaire de Théologie Catholique, Tables, entry Lucifer)

The hymn Lucis largitor splendide (Light's glorious giver) by St. Hilary of Poitiers, contains the line “Tu verus mundi Lucifer” (You are the true light bringer of the world) this time applied to St. John the Baptist, who announced the Messiah.

We do not believe those chants sung in the videos you send us have any connotation of adoration of the Devil, as their authors wrongly suppose.

Petition against Offensive Movie by Disney

Dear TIA,

I received the invitation below from the editor of Life Site and I am passing it on to you and your readers. I believe it is a good thing to sign this petition against an offensive movie by Disney.

Keep up your good work.

     M.E.

Dear M.E.,

Disney-ABC is about to release a new sit-com based upon the life of anti-Christian bigot and X-rated sex columnist Dan Savage. This week they released the first trailer, which is so offensive that I could hardly believe what I had just seen. We are running a petition urging Disney to cancel the show, which has already been signed by over 10,000 people. You can find that petition here. Please be sure to sign it, and share it with your friends!

Several other important stories today as well, including a heart-breaking testimony from a former abortion nurse, about her experiences 'cleaning up' after late-term abortions - the same kind of abortions that the U.S. House just voted this week to ban. No surprise that Obama is very unhappy with that vote.

Language Is the Dress of Thought

Dear TIA,

I am in the process of preparing a book for my children, grandchildren and future generations. This book is about the lives of my wife and myself. It will have a very limited distribution, primarily to family members.

In this book I cover my Catholic roots and the problems in the Church today. I also cover the cultural situation of today (clothing, speech, etc.) and what we need to do. In this book, I am including an article by Marian T. Horvat, " 'Language Is the Dress of Thought' - Vulgarity: The Style of Our Days." I am asking permission to use this article. The author's name and source of article will be included.

Dr. Horvat responds:

Dear Mr. R.H.,

Preparing a book for your family is an admirable and very traditional act. I am honored that you would include my article and you have my permission to use it.

     Cordially,

Delusional Insanity 2015

TIA,

A good example of this modern, self-inflicted insanity is the great number of single mothers who allow 'boyfriends' to spend the night at their homes with the full knowledge of their children. Yet they hide from them when they want to smoke cigarettes.

Do Pets Go to Heaven?

TIA,

Beautifully done response by TIA to this 'question.'

"We must care for animals. This is the only life they have." St. Therese of the Child Jesus. (paraphrase.)

“Joy is freedom from Mortal Sin." Fr. Bede OSB, Latin Mass indult

     Thank you for your work,

Sachs Accepted by the Vatican

TIA,

I want you to know that Jeffrey Sachs, a proponent of all kinds of contraception methods to reduce population, co-hosted with the Vatican a recent conference on the environment.

So, to prepare the public for an encyclical on a subject that a pope should not address, the Vatican makes a de facto acceptance of one of the heroes of contraception…

We are living in awful times, indeed.

Read the news report here.

No more Converts

TIA,

Seeking converts is solemn nonsense? The Council implicitly taught so.

Vatican II scrupulously avoided language such as “a return to Peter's fold.”

Read my comments here.

Criminal Priest

TIA,

Bonjour!

I just saw on Canadian news a story about a woman who was raped by a Catholic priest from Nigeria but the Canadian Government did nothing to help her. The man was allowed to get in and out of the country without any problems. If you want, you can show this news clip on your site; I watched it a few minutes ago.

Should a Catholic Date a Protestant?

Hello,

I am in dire need of advice:

Exactly 6 months ago I met a protestant boy who I get along with greatly and we have really grown to like each other a lot, although there is one major difference: he is protestant and I'm Catholic ... In the past we have had discussions of our religions and he is very strong and firm in his beliefs and almost seems anti-Catholic at times...

We have discussed how this relationship can work by saying that I will go to his church on Saturday and he will attend the Catholic Church on Sunday.

Do you think this is a recipe for disaster? Should we end this now? For what reason would God put him in my life ?

     Thank you,

     P.T.P.

TIA responds:

Hello P.T.P.,

Thank you for the confidence you place in us when you ask your questions. We respond to you with respect, although briefly.

Hardcore Protestants do not convert as easily as you imagine, and your friend seems to be one of them. We believe the agreement that proposes that you go to a Protestant temple is a bad one. A Catholic never goes to a heretic temple. Avoid doing so.

Yes, we believe this relationship is a recipe for disaster. You may abandon your Faith and he will demand to have your children raised in the Protestant sect he belongs to. We think it is better for you to let him go his way.

It is not certain that it was God who put him in your life. There are many bad angels – devils – who could also have done so. God may have just allowed it to test your faith.

We hope this will help you.
