Christmas Carols

Il Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant

French Christmas Carol

Il Est Ne, le Divin Enfant (He is Born, the Divine Child) is a French Christmas carol singing the praises of the Child Jesus. After thousands of years mankind rejoices as the world has finally received the Saviour.

The music is believed to be a 17th or 18th century hunting tune from Normandy, while the text was first published in the 1870's in Dom G. Legeay's Noêls Anciens. This Christmas carol attained such international popularity that there is even a Mohawk version 'Rotonni NiioRoie Mia' that has been collected from Harriet and Carol La France of the St. Regis Mohawk reservation in the U.S.

Listen to Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant

Lyrics:

Il est ne, le divin Enfant,
Jouez, hautbois, resonnez, musettes;
Il est ne, le divin Enfant;
Chantons tous son avenement.

Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
Nous Le promettaient les Prophetes;
Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
Nous attendions cet heureux temps.

Il est ne, le divin Enfant,
Jouez, hautbois, resonnez, musettes;
Il est ne, le divin Enfant;

Jouez, hautbois, resonnez, musettes;
Il est ne, le divin Enfant;
Chantons tous son avenement.

O, Jesus, O, Roi tout puissant.
Tout petit enfant que vous etes,
O, Jesus. O, Roi tout puissant.
Regnez sur nous entierement.

Il est ne, le divin Enfant,
Jouez, hautbois, resonnez, musettes;
Il est ne, le divin Enfant;
Chantons tous son avenement.

Translation:

He is born, the divine Child,
Oboes play; set bagpipes sounding
He is born, the divine Child.
Let all sing His nativity.

For more than four thousand years,
Prophets have foretold His coming,
For more than four thousand years,
Have we waited this happy day.

He is born, the divine Child,
Oboes play; set bagpipes sounding
He is born, the divine Child.
Let all sing His nativity.

Ah, how lovely He is, Ah, how fair,
How perfect are His graces,
Ah, how lovely He is, Ah, how fair.
How gentle is the divine Child.

He is born, the divine Child,
Oboes play; set bagpipes sounding
He is born, the divine Child.
Let all sing His nativity.

Jesus Lord, O, powerful King,
Though a little babe you come here,
O, Jesus, O, powerful King,
Rule completely over us.

He is born, the divine Child,
Oboes play; set bagpipes sounding
He is born, the divine Child.
Let all sing His nativity.
