Es Ist ein Ros Enstprungen

German Christmas Carol

Es ist ein Ros Enstprungen is a German carol believed to have originated in the 16th century. The song uses the prophetic symbolism of the Blessed Virgin as the flower springing from the root of Jesse. Holy Mary brings us the purest flower, the Word of God, while remaining a pure virgin. The shepherds, hearing the news of the Incarnation from the angelic hosts, hurry to Bethlehem to rejoice over the birth of Christ.

This harmonized version of Es ist ein Ros Enstprungen was written by German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609, and is sung here by the Vienna Boys Choir.

Listen to Es Ist ein Ros Enstprungen

German Lyrics:

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,
Aus einer Wurzel zart.
Wie uns die Alten sungen,
Von Jesse war die Art.
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht,
Mitten im kalten Winter,
Wohl zu der halben Nacht.

Das Röslein, das ich meine,
Davon Jesaia sagt,
Maria ist die reine,
Die uns das Blümlein bracht.
Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat
Hat sie ein Kind geboren
Und blieb ein reine Magd.

Den Hirten brachte Kunde,
Davon ein Engelheer
Uns sagte wo zur Stunde,
Christus geboren wär.
Zu Bethlehem im Stall
Das Kind alsbald sie fanden,
Gar hoch sich freuten all.

Translation:

A rose has sprung up,
From a tender root.
As the old ones sang to us,
Its lineage was from Jesse.
And it has brought forth a floweret,
In the middle of the cold winter,
Well at half the night.

The rosebud that I mean,
Of which Isaiah told,
Is Mary, the pure,
Who brought us the floweret.
At God’s Immortal Word,
She has borne a child,
Remaining a pure Maid.

The shepherds brought news,
Of the angelic hosts,
That told them the hour,
Christ would be born.
In Bethlehem in a stable,
They soon found the Child,
They all rejoiced greatly.
