Holy Week Liturgy

Recessit Pastor Noster

Recessit Pastor Noster - Our Shepherd Has Departed - is the thirteenth responsorial for Holy Week. Christ, the Shepherd of mankind, has died. Our Savior hangs dead on the Cross and the sun has darkened to mark the mourning of creation's God. Mankind is without its Messiah, yet it is through His death that our salvation is obtained. The tyranny of  death and Satan is shattered by the infinitely precious sacrifice of Calvary.

Recessit Pastor Noster was composed by Fr. Tomás Luis de Victoria.
It is here sung by the choir La Colombina

Latin Lyrics:

Recessit Pastor Noster,
Fons aquae vivae,
Ad cuius transitum,
Sol obscuratus est.

Nam et ille captus est,
Qui captivum tenebat primum hominem.
Hodie portas mortis et seras pariter,
Salvator Noster disrupit.

Destruxit quidem claustra inferni,
Et subvertit potentias Diaboli.

Nam et ille captus est,
Qui captivum tenebat primum hominem.
Hodie portas mortis et seras pariter,
Salvator Noster disrupit.

Translation:

Our Shepherd has departed,
The fount of living water,
And at His passing,
The sun has darkened.

But now that one was made a prisoner,
He who held prisoner the first man.
Today the gates of death along with its locks,
Were broken asunder by Our Savior.

He has indeed destroyed the barriers of Hell,
And has overthrown the powers of the Devil.

But now that one was made a prisoner,
He who held prisoner the first man.
Today the gates of death along with its locks,
Were broken asunder by Our Savior.
