Holy Week Liturgy

Calicem Salutaris

Calicem salutaris means the Chalice of Salvation, and is the verse accompanying the cleansing of the Chalice in Holy Week. It is sung without the slightest tone of joy, reflecting the state of the Church as a disconsolate widow mourning the loss of her Spouse.

Calicem Salutaris is the first antiphon for Vespers on Good Friday.
It is here sung by Magadala.

Latin lyrics

Calicem salutaris accipiam,
Et sacrificabo hostian laudis.

Credidi, propter quod locutus sum:
Ego autem humiliatus sum nimis.

Ego dixi in excessu meo:
Omnis homo mendax.

Quid retribuam Domino:
Pro omnibus quae retribuit mihi?

Calicem salutaris accipiam:
Et nomen Domini invocabo.

Vota mea Domino reddam
Coram omni populo ejus:
Pretiosa in conspectu Domini
Mors sanctorum ejus.

O Domine, quia ego servus tuus:
Ego servus tuus, et filius ancillae tuae.

Dirupisti vincula mea:
Tibi sacrificabo hostiam laudis,
Et nomen Domini invocabo.

Vota mea Domino reddam
In conspectu omnis populi ejus:
In atriis domus Domini,
In medio tui Jerusalem.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto,
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper,
Et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Calicem salutaris accipiam,
Et sacrificabo hostian laudis.
English translation

I shall take the chalice of salvation,
and I shall sacrifice the lauded host.

I have believed, therefore have I spoken:
But I have been humbled exceedingly.

I said in my excess:
Every man is a liar.

What shall I render to the Lord
For all the things he hath rendered to me?

I shall;take the chalice of salvation:
And I shall call upon the name of the Lord.

I shall pay my vows to the Lord
Before all His people:
Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of his saints.

Oh Lord, for I am thy servant:
I am thy servant, and the son of thy slave.

Thou hast broken my bonds:
I shall sacrifice to thee a sacrifice of praise,
And I shall call upon the name of the Lord.

I shall pay my vows to the Lord
In the sight of all His people:
In the courts of the house of the Lord,
In the midst of thee, O Jerusalem.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,
As it was in the beginning, is now,
And ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I shall take the chalice of salvation,
and I shall sacrifice the lauded host.
