Maria Walks amid the Thorns

German Christmas Carol

Maria Durch Ein' Dornwald Ging is a popular German folk song that goes back to the Middle Ages. It was actually first a pilgrimage song, describing the journey of Our Lady with the Christ Child in her womb on her way to see her cousin St. Elizabeth. As she walked along the winter path lined with thorn trees, roses bloomed on them in acknowledgement of the presence of the Creator among them.

Today it is a favorite Christmas carol, reflecting well the innocence of the German people. It is interpreted here by the boys choir, St. Thomas Choir Leipzig.
