Do use a cane for balance & distinction
In February of 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark made her first public appearance after undergoing a serious back surgery. To assist her stability, she carried a cane as she appeared at the doors of Fredesborg Castle in Denmark.Since then, without embarrassment or apologies, she regularly appears with the cane that offers her support and balance. For example, in the photo above, Queen Margrethe and her sister Queen Anne Marie of Greece arrive at Drottningholm Palace Theatre for the Royal Opera’s Golden Jubilee performance on September 14, 2023.
Instead of following the modern style of shunning canes because they “make one look old,” the Queen accepts the foibles of aging, and follows the tradition where members of families – both men and women – did not hesitate to use a cane when they became elderly.
In times past some elderly men showed such a distinction in using their canes that it became a fashion even among the young men.
We wish that more statesmen and personalities, especially in our casual and "forever young" United States, will follow the good example of Queen Margrethe and add a dignified cane to their wardrobe as they age.
Do use a cane for balance and distinction.
