Marie of Denmark in Cambodia

Don't wear baseball caps on official visits

Princess Marie of Denmark acted as ambassador of her country on a five-day visit to Cambodia. The trip was to commemorate the approaching centenary of DanChurchAid, a humanitarian organization of which she was named official patroness.

In the picture above, the Danish Princess wears a baseball cap and a casual shirt as she greets farmers in the province of Kampong Chhang who have benefited from the services of that organization.

The Princess was amiable and kind, but her dress and attitude were hardly appropriate to her title. The baseball cap is a casual hat intended for men to wear in sports. In our modern days it has been unfortunately adopted by men and women, worn not only outdoors but even indoors. But it is not proper for a representative of a country – and particularly a Princess – to wear a baseball cap on an official State visit to Cambodia.

It would please the Cambodians to see their patroness in elegant dress, expressing respect for the simple people and for herself. The shy young girl she greets would be certainly enchanted to see a Princess in elegant dress and refined manners. Instead, the Princess adopted this American behavior, pretending to be like everyone else.

She also chose similarly vulgar clothing during her previous visit to Uganda. Princess Marie donned a series of dressed-down looks throughout the visit, often selecting a t-shirt, jeans and baseball hat for her appearances.

Below we can see her joking and laughing with the Ugandan people who are dressed in simple but charming clothing, much more dignified than hers. In the second row, again in a baseball cap and industrial worker gloves, she met with workers who benefit from that Danish organization.

If she would have chosen one of the dresses she wore on other occasions, last row, she certainly would have made a better impression.

Don't wear baseball caps on official visits.
