Miragres Fremosos Faz por Nos

Galician Song – Cantiga de Santa Maria n. 037

Miragres Fremosos Faz por Nos, translated as the Astonishing Miracles She Works for Us, is a song about a miraculous cure worked by Our Lady. A man with an inflamed foot is brought to a chapel of Our Lady. The pain is so great his foot is amputated, leaving him a destitute cripple. Even so, he has full confidence and recourse to prayer to the Virgin Mary. Our Lady hears his petition, and in his sleep she restores his foot to perfect health. In the morning the whole town is astonished and venerates Our Lady for the great miracle she worked in favor of her confiding son.

Miragres Fremosos Faz por Nos is number 37 out of 420 poem-songs written under the aegis of King Alfonso X the Wise in honor of Our Lady.

It is here performed by Jordi Savall and
La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hesperion XX.

Lyrics:

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Fremosos miragres faz
Que en Deus creamos,
E maravillosos
Por que o mais temamos;
Porend' un daquestes
Ben que vos digamos,
Dos mais piadosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Est' avo na terra
Que chaman Berria,
Dun ome coytado
A que o pe ardia,
E na ssa eigreja
Ant' o altar jazia
Ent' outros coitosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Aquel mal do fogo
Atanto o coytava,
Que con coita dele
O pe tallar mandava;
E depois eno conto
Dos topos ficava,
Desses mais astrosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Pero con tod' esto
Sempr' ele confïando,
En Santa María
E mercee chamando,
Que dos séus miragres
En el fosse mostrando
Non dos vagarosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

E dizendo: “Ai, Virgen,
Tu que és escudo,
Sempre dos coitados,
Quéras que acorrudo,
Seja per ti; se non,
serei oi mais tẽudo,
Por dos mais nojosos.”

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Lógo a Santa Virgen
A el en dormindo,
Per aquel pé
A mão indo e vĩindo,
Trouxe muitas vezes,
E de carne comprindo,
Con dedos nerviosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

E quando s' espertou,
Sentiu-se mui ben são,
E catou o pé;
E pois foi del ben certão,
Non semellou lóg',
Andando per esse chão,
Dos mais preguiçosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Miragres fremosos,
Faz por nos Santa Maria,
E maravillosos.

Quantos aquest' oíron,
Lóg' alí vẽéron,
E aa Virgen santa
Graças ende déron,
E os séus miragres
Ontr' os outros tevéron,
Por mais grorïosos.

English translation:

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

She works astonishing miracles
For us to believe in God,
And marvellous ones
So that we fear Him more;
And about one of these miracles
It is good for us to tell you,
One of the most pious.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

It took place in the land
That is called Berria,
To a poor man
Whose foot was burned,
And in her church
He placed himself before the altar
Among the other sick people.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

That wound caused by fire
Was sheathed with cloth,
Because in its damaged state
The foot had to be cut off;
And after that was done
The bone remained,
Appearing quite dreadful.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

But, even after that,
He always trusted
In Holy Mary,
And asked for her mercy,
That one of her miracles
She would work for him
Without delay.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

And he said: "Oh, Virgin,
You who are the shield
Always of those who are sick,
Deign that what happened
Be mended by you; or else
I will be considered,
One of the most disgusting persons."

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

And soon the Holy Virgin,
While he was sleeping,
Came near his foot,
Her hand going back and forth,
Passing over it many times,
And she covered it with flesh,
With toes and nerves.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

And when he woke up,
He felt well and healthy,
And touched his foot
And realized it had been healed.
He did not hesitate,
And started to walk on the floor,
Very slowly.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

Astonishing miracles,
That Holy Mary works for us,
And marvellous.

All those who heard about it,
Went quickly there to see him,
And to the Holy Virgin
They gave thanks,
And of her many other miracles
They considered this
To be one of the most glorious.
