Pachamama ritual in Cusco, Peru
On August 13, 2026, in the city of Cusco, Peru, a two-day conference started under the title Interweaving Voices for Dignity – Entrelazando Voces por la Dignidad. The goal of the meeting was to consider suggestions coming from Indians in various regions of Peru regarding improving their lives. Then, they will present their results to Pope Leo XIV when he visits the country in November. An initiative following the Francis policy of giving a "Tribalist face to the Church."Present were the Bishop of Iquitos, Miguel Angel Cadenas, who presided over the event, above third red arrow from the left, Auxiliary Bishop of Cusco, Lizardo Estrada, first red arrow, and Vatican official Msgr. Jordi Bertumeu, from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, middle red arrow.
The first session of the encounter was a ceremony where a woman-speaker reminded all present that the month of August, especially August 1st, is dedicated to Mother Earth – the goddess Pachamama – and that they should make returns to the Earth for what it had given them. This 'payment to the earth' is an ancestral ceremony of the Incas in the Andes.
Then, the speaker distributed to the participants coca leaves, which are the symbol of spiritual connection to and reverence for the ancestors. Next, she instructed those presents to blow over the leaves to send their intentions to the sacred sphere. Those leaves were then collected and placed in a clay pot to be burned. Second row below, we see Bishop Estrada and Msgr. Bertumeu bringing their coca leaves to the pot.
On the floor was an Andean shawl that served as an altar upon which the gifts were placed. Some clay pots contained regional seeds and grains representing the "food for the Earth" and a straw basket containing the coca leaves, as mentioned above. Some bottles of sacred liquids were meant to placate the thirst of Mother Earth. In one of the corners there was a folded woolen belt, to symbolize the "communitarian embrace" of the Indigenous peoples.
The green branches represented spiritual purification and ecological justice. Flowers arranged in a spiral symbolized the cyclic time of the Incas. The four corners of the shawl had two flowers each to represent the eight regions of Peru represented at that meeting. The flowers were red and yellow to stand for the energy of the sun and the blood of earth, indicating also the victims of the violence of the State against the Indians.
We can see that nothing in that initial ceremony was without a pagan ritual meaning.
By participating in that ritual to Pachamama, the Prelates caused a great scandal. They not only entered into religious syncretism, but also adhered to a para-demonic worship.
